The ravines around Grand Valley State University are constantly eroding, be it by Mother Nature and its processes or by our own desires to build and develop the land around us to suit our needs. The landscape surrounding this university is fragile, it is an unbalanced ecosystem and one that our human involvement continues to tip the scale to its destruction. Despite our efforts to go green by use of porous parking lots and water retention ponds it is not enough. In an effort to do more and to raise awareness of what is happening to the landscape, I have created a project that physically involves the viewer in the process of erosion, whether they are aware or unaware that it is happening. This installation provides the viewer with an opportunity to either, walk through the soil and erode the piece down to the man-made floor below or the viewer can walk around the soil in an effort to go green and protect the environment.
